Position Summary

We are seeking outstanding undergraduate students to participate in our six-week summer vacation scholarship program, and undertake research projects in areas as diverse as, cancer immunology, cell biology, cancer genomics and genetics, bioinformatics and clinical research. Get involved in real-life laboratory-based research, and contribute to this exciting cancer research.


How to Apply

Applications are invited from current undergraduate students who have completed at least one full year of a Science, Applied Science, Biomedical Science or relevant tertiary course at the time of application. Applications must be submitted through eRecruit and all supporting attachments uploaded electronically. Students must complete the online application form and submit as part of their application. Applications must be received by 5pm, Thursday 8th August 2019. Late applications will not be accepted.

  3. A copy of the most recent academic transcript of results - This can be your unofficial transcript downloaded off the university website. Note: If you are offered a place in the program following the interview process, you will need to obtain an original official transcript of results.

How to Choose a Project Area

On the application form, you need to rank the preferred project areas in order of preference. Ranking will allow you to express your research interest and help the supervisors to match your interests to available projects. To help you in this task, visit our website to find out more about all of our research programs. 


What happens once you have submitted your application? 

  1. The supervisors will view all applications, and select students for interview.  There are no minimum or maximum numbers of students selected for interview. 
  2. Students selected for interviews will be advised by phone and/or email in the period from Monday, 19 August - Friday, 23 August 2019. Note: Due to the high number of applications received only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
  3. It is anticipated that interviews will be held at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, 305, Grattan Street, Melbourne 3000 VIC from 26 August – 06 September 2019. All unsuccessful interviewees will be notified by 13 September.       
  4. We match students to projects after feedback from the students and the supervisors.
  5. The timing of the project placement is then worked out in consultation with the student and supervisor.
  6. If you are awarded a Peter Mac Summer Vacation Scholarship and are studying at a Victorian university, we will also work with you to prepare an application for a Cancer Council Victoria Summer Vacation Studentship 2019/20, applications for which are due in September. Note: All Peter Mac CCV Summer applications are prepared as part of this summer process. 
  7. All successful students will be required to attend an induction held on 25 November 2019 before commencing their project.


Selection Criteria Essential: Current undergraduate students who have completed at least one full year of a Science, Applied Science, Biomedical Science or similar tertiary course at the time of application.
